Type: 1. Origin — The term dome fastener describes a type of button that snaps and is used primarily on clothing. The earliest Canadian attestations of dome fastener appear to be exclusive to leather gloves (see the 1889 and 1934 quotations). This term is likely of Canadian origin, as attestations appear to predate British (OED-3, s.v "dome" (5f)) and New Zealand (DNZE, s.v. "dome" (1)) sources by around 20 years. Based on the historical Globe and Mail newspaper archives, this term was most popular during the period of 1900-1940, accounting for around 90 percent of the total search count (483/546).
